So I made spud a humid hide, Im getting the sphagnum moss soon but I have to get it online and order it so it will take a few days. I put foil around the edge as he was trying to get out of through the wall. ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1432540371.491330.jpg
It took a lot if re arranging his "toys" to get it in and it doesn't look nice but it's for the best so I don't mind lol

Looks very humid, but I wouldn't use the foil because torts are very curious like toddlers and will sample things in their enclosure. He will definitely bite off a piece of foil. He may never bite it for a year then all of a sudden bite off a piece. They're unpredictable! :D

Still duct tape. He'll eat it if it peels up. Maybe you can find a deeper container and just bury in the substrate.

Use a plastic tub and cut a hole in it. There's your excuse to buy ice cream or sherbet in a large quantity.

I have spray painted the plastic tubs. As long as it's had time to gas off the odors it is cheep and permanent.

Looks good, but I do agree with Christina: a torts are very curious and be it foil or tape, your tort could bite it. Take care.

Well, it didn't go as planned. I think may have to take it out! He has fallen on his back trying to climb it twice and he also keeps getting stuck at the side of it . He also goes in and tries to go out the wall even though there is tape. Look: ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1432607320.024624.jpg

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!

Tom uses black dish pans that he buys at Walmart. It might be better if you can find something with a more square shape, or else move it out of the corner. Then stuff a bunch of stuff (?) behind it so he can't fit in there.

You're on the right track. Keep working on it.

I can't outsmart him lol! If he wants to climb, he will climb! I just don't know what to do. When I go out I actually have to turn his light off so he sleeps so I know he won't fall on his back for a long time. I don't think there is anything in his enclosure he hasn't climbed o_O Its like having a baby in the house!

I think the "clamshell" that Earthbound Farms Spring Mix comes in might be a good shape for you to try.

I shall try... I'm worried about when I get the sphagnum moss, he will probably, almost certainly, try to eat it. o_O

You could try any plastic tub, one of those large butter tubs, I like the ice cream tub idea :), or go to the hardware store or plant section of any store and see what you find. Any plastic container he can't see through will work. Then you just cut a hole in it slightly bigger than he is. If the sides are straight up he won't climb it if you are worried you can pile substrate all around and on top of it so he can walk up and over it. The tape is just too dangerous in my opinion. Not worth the risk at all.

Thanks, I'm looking to cover half my enclosure over. Until then, I'm trying my best to keep humidity up. I will definitely try.

Especially at the beginning, I think we all did a lot of trial and error to get things right. It takes a little time but soon you will be walking through a store and see some random object and think wow, that would really work for my tortoise. Believe me it will happen to you. You're going to be making a lot of changes between now and the time your tortoise is an adult. So just go with it and you'll do fine. There's lots of great information here.

Thank you, I'm glad I found this as spud has the slightest beginning of pyramiding so I'm working on my humidity. Are humidifiers any good? I don't know if that would just make the whole room humid though. When I upgrade his home I sure will plan ahead with humidity in mind

I personally would not bother with the humidifier. It will be easy for you to modify the table you have right now. And you have some time to design the next upgrade. Maybe an enclosure such as the one @Elohi made it. I think he reported it was a raised garden bed with a greenhouse included on top. I think it could be made up 2 x 4 x 8' which would get you through for a while

I established good humidity because I have deep moist substrate, a lid and and a homemade fogger. As for the little humid hide and him getting lodged between it. Try securing it deeper in the dirt and then stuffing moss in the cracks so he can't access the cracks. Here's my fogger it was easy, a Crane humidifier and some tubing...ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1432582658.924335.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1432582687.991511.jpg
