ideas needed to find a burrowed tortoise before it gets any colder

My new little tortoise burrowed a few days ago and never came out. The nights are getting cold and I worry about him. I have looked and dug everywhere and can't find him. Any suggestion???

Look for him in the morning right after the sun is out. They usually come out to bask in the sun and warm up in the mornings.

If it's a russian it has probably gone down for the winter. Take a length of rod and go over the whole enclosure poking the rod into the ground until you feel him. On your hands and knees look for areas of soft dirt.
