I haven't been here long, but I have noticed that most of the sick/dying/dead tortoise threads are from new people. People who probably didn't come to places like this in order to discover the best possible care for their pets, but are now here to vent or get some last-minute advice.
It's the nature of the pet trade, unfortunately. People don't need a license or any type of certificate to buy a pet (usually). They just see one they think is cute, get it, it gets ill or dies, and the cycle continues.
It happens with all types of pets. The pet trade is about money for the most part and not "adopting" out an animal. I'm also aware that people who do care for their pets properly also have casualties.
