I have a large turtle that has an interesting way of basking.
She always basks in this position, never in any other way... facing away from pond, with back feet in the water, Sometimes she will lift her feet out of the water, extended away from her body, then after a period of time she will lower them into the water again.
I think in doing so, she is regulating her body temperature. She is a big girl, over 7 pounds, so walking around on land to reposition herself probably takes a lot more energy than her current method.
I think she's pretty smart!
BTW, if anybody can ID her species for me, I would certainly appreciate it.
