In addition to keeping tortoises I collect WWII items. I got this photo in a lot of German photos. I'm not trying to offend anyone with this pic, I just thought it was interesting. This picture was taken in France in 1941.

Neat picture, I like old pics like that, they show history as it really was.Back in the early 1900s the Girls Club of America used that insignia on it's banners, not sure when they discarded it. Here is a pic from France that I believe was taken in the 30s.

Interesting for sure. A retired engineer buddy of mine used to live in Arizona back in the 50's on an old working ranch and said that several times a year these big old Desert tortoises (he was around 8 years old so he's not sure exactly what species they were) would come to his house and drink in the little pond they had out behind his house and he would pick them up and they had carvings in them that were really old. So I guess what i'm saying is that for whatever reason tortoises have always been "picked" on, lol

That's some heavy-duty paint on those tortoises. We've come a long way.

Note the holes drilled into the rear of the shell for a cable or chain...this used to be a common way to tether tortoises!

It still is.....I have quite a few Tortoises from around the world that have it, including a Male Impressa that was brought in a month or two ago......

Wow! Very neat pics. I was at a craft sale last month and I bought a silver tortoise charm from a guy there. He was telling me how he grew up in CA and way back then they kept lots of torts and spoke of drilling a hole in their back to chain them. I cringed! I couldn't even imagine such a thing. Interesting to see it here on the other side of the world too.
