Is this an infection/problem?

Hi all,

My wild rescue redfoot apears to have an unusual scale in the area behind her right eye. Does this look like a problem?

Her behaviour is normal and she appears lively and happy, but I just noticed this area in a picture.

And advice would be much appreciated.

It's probably nothing to be worried about. Looks like a bit of skin was pulled away. Hopefully, with no blood supply, it'll die and fall off. You can liken it to a hang nail.

Gentian violet is not a cure-all; it is an anti-fungal.

Your tort does not appear to have a fungal infection, and I would be extremely cautious about using g.v. near/around the eyes.

I wouldn't use it that close to the eye.

I'd keep an eye on it.
If it doesn't get larger or start to bleed, I wouldn't worry about it.

Tortoises take roughly three to four times longer to heal than humans. Here is an example: when tortoises have invasive surgery requiring stitches, the stitches are left in for about three weeks or so. In humans, stitches placed at an incision site can be removed in 5-7 days.
