To use these lights in a 20g long enclosure? Ive been reading, and some lights can be harmful & may even cause blinding. Any advice would be greatly accepted. Im just worried they might be too strong.
The only one not recommended for use with tortoises is the coil type cfl lamp. The others two white lamps are designed for daytime basking use. They work fine but are pricey compared to standard household incandescent which work equally as well. The red bulb is also an indescent, designed to produce night time heat. Night time heat may or may not be necessary for your tortoise depending upon species and the ambient air temperature in it's enclosure at night.
Okay thank you for that advice. Why is the coil bulb lamp not good? Its the only uvb light i could find. & do you think 10.0 is too strong for a baby sulcata?
I would recommend mercury vapor bulbs, it's a UVB and a heat spot.
I could be wrong on the reason why the coil bulbs are bad but I believe it was that its not bright enough for them to not look at and so it causes blindness.
But I'm not 100% sure that's the reason. Just trying to remember.
Aawww a bby sulcata? Cute!
return all of those because the 2 basking lights and 1 night time light are pretty much over priced ordinary light bulbs and the coil type uvb bulbs have a history of being harmful to tortoise's eyes.
instead opt for
option 1:
a more convenient zoo med power sun mercury vapor bulb. it provides heat AND uvb all in one bulb.
or
option 2:
get a normal household bulb (make sure it doesn't say soft white. it has to be incandescent; a clear one where you see the inside and the filament) for heat but as for how many watts i cannot say. do some research because you'll have to play around with how high or low you have to hang the light fixture along with the wattage type of the bulb to achieve the desired temperature. however, based on the products you showed it looks like the range could be between 60-75 watts.
AND
a reptisun 5.0 or 10.0 uvb fluorescent tube light. the difference between both is that one has a longer reach of uv rays than the other. this also means you have to buy a strip light for the tube light to work.
