I have only had my tortoise for a few weeks. She is about 5 inches long and Is a Yellow foot tortoise. Unfortunately like a lot of people on this site, the pet store owner told me a lot of information that was not true. Today I noticed a few spots that look like little chunks of missing shell. I attached photos as well. Any thoughts as to what those spots could be? Also what is everyone using for protein? I have been told ground turkey meat and cat food. Or meal worms?

It looks less like a rot than an abraded area- anything it is or was rubbing against that was rough?

Meats can be pretty near anything- but not much of it. Slugs, bugs, pinkie rats, egg, oily fish, chicken chunks, organ meat, etc.

Why ground turkey? That seems awfully messy to me.

Meal worms are relished, but the shell is hard to digest, so limit how many they get at a time.

I have only had her for a few weeks. Nothing I can think of that would have caused that to her shell. The lady who sold me dot said to use ground turkey, but the more research I do and talking to other tortoise owners the more I realize she had no idea on the proper care of a yellow foot.

I give my RedFoot cooked chicken once a month. Not a lot mind you. I usually end up making myself chicken salad. And give him about a fifty cent size piece cut up.
