Im in central Fl, as said before, and most homes are built with a well-water pump. the only thing thats not good is that most of the wells have alot of sulfur in the water. Its stinky and sometimes will leave orange stains on the wall n such. Im sure there are other minerals in the water too. so does anyone know if it is safe for soaks or drinking? we use it to water the grass... and they eat the grass... so? Is it okay?

I was looking to rent a house in the Palmetto area back in the mid 70s and was told the water was safe. It smelled so bad I had a hard time just trying to shower, no way could I drink it.The local people said they didn't think it had a strange odor, they were used to it. I found a house that was on city water, It smelled just like the water I was used to, but don't know if it was better for me or not. so I feel it is just as safe( if not safer) as city water just smells bad to me. You can get a report from the source that tests/maintains water quality to find out what is in the water....then you will have the information needed to research if the water is good :D I would imagine if the water it potable for human consumption then there should not be anything too weird in it.... :p

This.

You need to determine if the water is potable.

Do you drink it?

Sulfur in the water shouldn't be harmful. And after a while the smell/taste isn't that bad. :p

On the bright side, sulfur in the water is a natural mosquito repellant.

This totally depends on YOUR location. All of my tortoises at the ranch are on well water. I don't like the taste of it, but I showered in it for 3 1/2 years. Its heavy in minerals, but all of the ranch animals have lived on it for 15 years, so I know its safe. Several species of birds, fish and small mammals and reptiles have all live on it and in it. However, about 8 miles from here they are on a different water table/aquifer and the water is toxic. It doesn't kill plants, but its high in all sorts of bad stuff, like arsenic.

They first step for you would be to send out a sample and have it tested by a lab. Then, once you determine it is safe, I would test it on an amphibian or fish. If an animal like a fish or frog will live and thrive in your water, then it should be totally fine for you tortoises.
