What makes tortoises want to eat their cuttlebones? I mean, it's just a random white thing in their enclosure, but they still eat it. Mine eats it very often, and I was wondering, what makes them want to eat it? Do they know that it's calcium? I mean, it's white and doesn't really smell like anything lol

I've seen a tort try & take a bite outta styrofoam. Lol.

Who knows. But ...
they do smell things , and may smell something in the cuttlebone that attracts- even though we don't smell it.

My torts smell plants before they take a bite. What are they smelling for ? But some they pass up , others are gobbled.

Mine don't want to eat it. But tortoises seem to like white, red, bright orange colors. Put one of those colors on your toe nails and walk with toeless sandals and chances are they will be attracted to your toes. Just be careful they don't try to take a bite.
