Keeping Humidity?

Hello again guys

I have a few questions about keeping my Sulcata's home humidified.

I have a new open aired tortoise table that is 4' by 4' and I was wondering what the best way to keep it humidified would be?

Would a humidifier be a worthy purchase? If so do you guys have a suggestion as to the best one?

I realize that the best way to keep young torts happy and humidified is an enclosed living space but I've already gone and built him a sweet table so it's not really an option at the moment.

Thanks again,
Wade

Would something like this be worth buying?

I also use open top tables, yet I'm able to raise smooth leopard babies. I have a seed heating pad under the substrate at one end of the table, and put the hiding place over the pad. You can scrape away or add substrate to get it to the temperature you want inside the hiding place. Then I pack the hiding place with moist sphagnum moss. It has worked this way through two sets of baby leopard tortoises and they look great.

Many will disagree with me. But your ok the way it is. Just need a good spray down in the morning. Especially when the heat bulbs or whatever you use for heat has warmed up the substrate. A humifier is also a good choice. The key is to stabilize the local environment you have him in. If being an open top enclosure. Then stabilizing the room is what you will be seeking. Their is no constant humidity in the wild of Sulcata. Even in the rainforests in central/south america. Habitats go through diversified temperatures and humidity fluctuations. Maintaining a balance of medium within those per a meters is ideal. The issue with keeping tortoises is the heat heat bulbs, mats, CHE and other forms of heat tends to dry out the ambient and relative air. It also dries out the substrate, creating an not so ideal replication of natural balanced eco system. Blah blah blah from me. Just spray down the enclsure(make sure its not cold water or the substrate gets cold and wet either)

Hey wade,

It's worth a try. Totally up to you.

Yvonne, I wonder if your open table works well because it's set up in the heated tortoise shed as opposed to being set up in the average household living room. ???

And I agree with Kelly

I like the closed chambers for the youngins because it works so well in my house and is easy to maintain. But if you want to try and manage it in an open table, share with us how it goes :) :)
