After weighing whether to let our 2 juvenile DTs roam the entire back yard or keeping them in their current 30 sqft enclosure, we decided instead to find a spot for a second enclosure so each can have his/her own turf. We're toying with the idea of a long skinny one that goes along our concrete wall -- that's where our torts spend all their time when allowed to free roam anyway. It'd be 80% in deep shade from jacaranda and ficus trees, with strong morning to midday sun in one corner. Are there any disadvantages to doing that? I think it would end up being about 3x20, and would be for a rambunctious 6 inch male (we think).

First off a long enclosure is great, because that gives them the sense of having more room to roam because of the time before they come to a wall. (Once more that is a human's assumption of what they think and feel for which I think we really have no idea what goes on in their heads ;) ). The 3' is narrow, but the tortoise is only about 6" you say, so it's do able for now. The favor this area naturally, which makes it a good choice that way too. Sounds to me like a great plan!

I like the plan. I wish I could do the same, but I have no rain gutters and the ground stays too most. . .

Oooh, exciting: just got hubster to commit to an enclosure about 90 feet long! Of course I plied him with dinner and margaritas. Will try to close this deal this weekend. It's always a trick, balancing tort and human needs. Apparently he wants to use the yard for things like BBQs and that jacuzzi we never use. Such excess! My DTs need their space...

Quick! Give him another Margarita and sign on the dotted line. Sounds great.

Hahaha!!

I think that's fine! Tortoises tend to hug the edge as they walk around anyway, do he won't care that it's narrow.

Sounds like a terrific spot and fairly easy to install a short gate for easy access and barrier too.
