I just ordered 2 lbs of the Mazuri tortoise food. I'm wondering, how long will that last until I need more for my Russian (about 5 inches long)?

It will last quite a while if it is fed sparingly.

There are those who have created "Mazuri Junkies" by feeding too much mazuri. The torts get hooked and start refusing greens. Keep that in mind ;)

Junkies for sure....lol....when do offer the mazuri to the redfoot torts here, they will strike for a day or day and a half before they munch down their greens---but then again, that could be due to them turning into little porkers the moment their bionic noses catch wiff of the bag opening clear across the kitchen....lol....

The two smaller redfoot torts would eat a pile equal to the size of their shell easily if I offered it up....lol...."crackzuri"

There is actually a recommended feeding amount at the Mazuri site (http://www.mazuri.com/mazuritortoisediet.aspx)-
- Feed approximately 2-4% of body weight. It is not necessary to moisten pellets with water.
- Feed consumption will vary with environmental temperatures.
- Feed with good quality grass hay. If desired, feed fresh fruits and vegetables.
- At most 5% fruit and 20% vegetables by weight of total diet.
- Always provide animal with plenty of fresh, clean water.

At 5", it should weigh almost a pound or 16oz, which means about 0.32-0.64 ounces of food, which means about 10-20 pellets a day (that sounds wrong so I may have screwed up my math somewhere- each pellet weighs about 1.05 grams).

Silly Mark.. 10-20 pellets a day does sound crazy, but I crunched the numbers to double check. I got ~13 pellets for 3% of the body weight using your numbers provided. So pretty much you were right. That recommendation seems like a lot of pellets for such a little guy. I agree.. "crackzuri" :D

lol...The little redfoot babies (1 at about a year and 1 at about a year and a half--right Ed?) here can easily chomp down 6 moistened pellets in the time it take for me to walk around to the four enclosures and deposit their pellets and when I peek into see little piggie---all of the pellets are gone and he is lounging under the basking light laid out....so, yes they can consume a bit in a minute...lol :D

I recommend you soak around 6 pellets and mix than in with some greens twice a week.

I agree with Tom, I soak it for about 5 minutes in hot water then top dress the greens 2-3 times a week. I alternate with Marion Zoological. This way I never need to add calcium to their diet. I also add Zoomed grassland to their diet daily mixed in. They need more fiber and they get it with the grassland diet.
