Silly question, but can tortoises be safely microchipped?

Also a VERY dumb question, but could you safely tape a piece of laminated paper with contact info on the bottom of the shell?

These are purely what ifs:p

Yes, they can be microchipped. I had Joe done in case of escape from our garden.
I can't see that taping anything would work. The tape would come off and, in any case, the plates expand as the tort grows.

Anything stuck to the bottom of the shell would soon be scraped off. You can take a little address label and stick it on one of the edge scutes, then paint over it with clear nail polish, being careful to not get the paint on any growth areas. It would probably need replacing a couple times a year.

Yes, you can microchip tortoises. They do it all the time in the U.K.

Ok…ok…
So now it’s 2025.
I am a little late in thinking about this
BUUUUUT…….
Do YOU guys… and I am calling on EVERYONES OPINION…
Think it’s ok to microchip your tortoise?
Mine is 27 and I want to make sure everyone knows she is mine if she were to get lost somewhere but I just can’t see that this is not very painful for my tortoise???🐢
(Sorry for the double negative but it’s late and I can barely spell let alone figure out sentences 😂).
I watched a video on UTUBE and they did it on a young tortoise….
It looked so very painful for the little guy!!
ON HIS BACK LEG!!!!!!!!
I thought anything being done to a BACK leg is a no no????

I also have a question about
If a tortoises had a cateract can there be a very minimal invasive surgery to have it removed?
I had a vet tell me that they do that kind of thing? (Yes, it was an exotic vet)…
I know to check with MY GUYS before I believe in anything a VET has to say…
So that’s what I ask ….
Can a tortoise have a cateract removed?
If pictures are needed to tell me what it is I can accommodate….

Thank you in advance!!
❤️🙏🌹

I believe a micro chip in the back leg is really common, even the norm in certain species and countries. Maybe @Dustin or @Markw84 can comment on the micro chipping?

The back left upper leg, or inserting just under the left anal scute towards the femoral are the correct locations for microchipping a tortoise.

The "not in back leg" thing is in relation to administering medication.

I can tell you that when I put in the chip, and then check the reader is getting a good reading of the chip, I then immediately put them down to do the next. Immediately they will start eating and acting totally as if nothing at all has happened. The is sometimes a flinch when inserting the needle, but otherwise they seem totally unaffected by the whole process.

Maybe you should make a separate thread about the cataracts if you don't get responses here?

Here I am looking at the Tortoise health section on my computer. You would need to press that green button:

Thank you so very much I will try that when I get a chance. I don’t know when my life started taking on this burden of doing everything for everyone all at the same time but it is very exhausting…
I can’t wait till I get another chance to do something for myself soon… (hopefully).
