Last night I found one of my females like she was "nailed" to the plexiglass window in my terrarium. But when she suddenly moved away, I could see that she had been stuck there, since she actually had one of her toe nails missing on the front leg !

The nail (growing part) was "peeled off" and the white pulp was now fully visable. After a while she started to bleed, so I took her out and first gave her a shower, then cleaned it with some Betadine and stopped the bleeding by powdering some flour over it.

Then she seemed to be fine again and ate her supper together with the rest of her mates. It will be interesting to see how this will develop, since I've never experienced this before ? But since the pulp is intact, I recon that she will develop a new nail without problems.

Since Mimmi is one of my most productive females, I would have expected more like "Oh my god, oh my god, help me, please help me, I broke a nail !" But she took it like a man... :D (Poor thing)

Thats very odd...I'd expect it to grow back easily, since the rest of it looks fine. I've never seen anything like that before either.

I'm sorry that happened to her!! I laughed when you said she took it like a man! She's a salt of the earth type woman :p

Thanks for your replies, Mimmi is just as healthy as before, and does not seem to take any notice of her missing nail :)

But I was kind of expecting Madkins or JD to comment on this one !

Or anyone else that might had experienced this before ?

One of my redfoots has had a toenail torn out of the nailbed on two separate
occasions with very little blood loss and no problems as the nail grew back in.

It takes awhile and I would be careful to keep the area clean, especially
of fecal matter. Mine are on newspaper substrate.

If there is an open sore or wound, some polysporin ointment or silver
sulfadiazine could be applied to the area daily.

Good luck.
