I just bought a new one for my little tort and I turned it on and there was no light!! BUT! I tried to take it out (it burned me D:) and it was HOT! Does that mean it just doesn't work right or can we not see the light from it?

Extra: The dome is a wire lamp and the ceramic is a black color ish but it's not like a bulb shape it's more of a flat face one and has swirls on the face.

Also I bought a 100watt heat lamp today and I placed it into the dome that I used to had the 75watt in. It turned on normally and went in normally is that okay? I was gonna buy another dome but I couldn't find a dome that was meant for 100watts

ALSO! that happy face meant to be a sad face :(

Hi there, ceramic heat emitters aren't supposed to emit light, just the heat. That's why many reptile owners with nocturnal animals prefer using CHE's. It's very important that the dome lamp that you are using with the CHE is ceramic also and not plastic. :D

Well it's like a wire thingy and when i put my hand close to it it didn't really feel like any heat was coming on far. Also what's a CHE?

Yes but it's black. I went to petsmart to try to buy the white one but they said it was defective and wouldn't sell it to me so I had to get a black one sadly :(

CHE is short for ceramic heat emitter. And yeah some companies make black CHE's like Zilla. What do you mean by wiry thing? Can you take a pic?

Maybe someone else can interject but I would be wary about using a 100w in a lamp that is meant for 75w max. Also be sure that it's ceramic and meant to house ceramic heat emitters.

Yeah I still am :3 but I need to sync my phone to the laptop first since all the pictures are on there. Also I still have some unanswered questions I still don't get.

1. Will a 100watt do good for a dome used for 75watt?
2. When I first turned on the ceramic I didn't feel much heat.

Please answer the ceramic question since I want to use it tonight!!

1- I wound not use a 100 watt in a fixture made for a 75
2- it takes a few minutes to heat up. how long have you had it on ?

Well I couldn't find any made for a 100 but I think it would be okay for now since it seems to be okay. Also I only had it on for about 30 seconds

Just be careful and keep and eye on it it 's rated for a 75 watt not a 100 watt for a reason. you dont want it to start a fire :(

:( I am worried about that. Does that happen a lot to other people? Also does that mean I should get like one made for the 150 cause that's the only ones I found bigger then 75

Also what about the ceramic?

Try the petco at baileys crossroads or walmart at kings crossing. I got a 250 watt rated one from walmart.

Ceramic heat emitters emit heat in the infrared range- you won't see any light but it will heat the area nicely. It will take a while to get good and warm and at full blast it will easily burn you badly if you touch it.

The wire frame cage is great for lizards and snakes that can creep close to the bulb, but tortoises rarely jump so the wire frame is not as big of a deal.

The rating of the socket is basically how much heat it can handle. You always want to use a bulb rated equal or less than the socket. On the plus side- you can get ceramic sockets (often called breeder or brooder lamps) at almost any hardware store or home center- almost always for a lot less than at the pet store. (Here is one at Home Depot, rated for 300 watts, for $13)

=/ lighting and heating for a tortoise sure is pricey and difficult

Yep, and the bulb's light's burn out or simply need to be replaced. I bought a new bulb from Petco recently and it cost $80, long story short the bulb was not inside because it had been stolen. When I took it back and told them it was stolen they said it was the most stolen item in the store!! Iamsure glad they believed me and let me get a new one!
