My tortoise making funny noise with his mouth open an tongue out

my tortoise was standing on his stone with his mouth open tongue out making this screaming like noise it was weird i cant describe it he was doing it for a while i checked him to see if he was ok then he just carried on he seems ok now then it dawned on me was he making out with his rock?

i don't actually know how old he is we bought him about this time last year and the shop didn't know his age
