So I like to bring my baby cherries outside during the day so they can soak up some natural light. I put them in 2 conjoined tortoise houses so they have plenty of room to roam. The problem is if I put one spec of lettuce, fruit, or a single pellet in the enclosure I get an ant farm within an hour or 2. I bought a few saw horses to raise my enclosure well off of the ground. STILL GOT ANTS. I then cut a few pieces of high density foam into little 3/4in cubes so that the enclosure has VERY little contact points betwixt the saw horses and enclosure. STILL GOT ANT... I though they might have set up shop in my substrate and that wasnt the case either. Any suggestions?!?? I'm located in SW Florida so I'm dealing with the "Florida man" version of ants here. They are relentless.

Use your saw horses and encircle each leg with some flea and tick powder. Or set each leg in a tub of water with a little dish soap.

Then get some Amdro ant granules and start exterminating the ants one colony at a time, radiating out from the area where your tortoise enclosure is. You're going to need to do this one way or another so your tortoises can eventually live outside on the ground full time.

Yes….the tub of water around the leg trick. Similar to the moats sold for hummingbird feeders. My feeders without a moat are hung by thin fishing line…. Doesnt take long for a long thin line of ants to form on their way to & fro the sugar supply. The feeder with the moat of water keeps the ants away.

Good luck with the Amdro offensive. I use Terro ant granules - probably the same killer ingredient.

Awesome man thank you so much. I will do just that and let you know how it goes. You're right though I need to go to proper war with these ants sooner or later. I have 2 torts just shy of 4in but they're growing pretty fast. Might as well start the assault now.
