new substrate

hi, I want to change the coco coir to bark substrate, but the one in the petstore is so expensive. So can i get it from Home Depot ? do you know which brand is ok for my tortoise ??

What type of tortoise? I use cypress mulch and orchard bark, both found a Home Depot.

I buy the compressed coir bricks from amazon. A little goes a long way.

I buy a 3 pack of the coco coir bricks from that petulance.com. A lot cheaper and you just have to add water to it to make it expand.

Are use a combination of orchid bark and coconut coir.

I use the coco coir and bark but more of the coco coir. I don't like to use a lot of the bark in the areas where he burrows in because some of the pieces can get tucked in his shell when he pulls his legs in.

Love the coco coir and you can get it bulk too... you can also buy 'cypress mulch' at hardware stores, and orchid bark is sold there too

I use a combination of plantation soil and cypress mulch. Definitely recommend both, but lean a little more towards the soil/coco coir. Easier for them to dig into.

Yeah the orchid bark was in small bags, but I got it and put it on top of my coir, that way it bulks it up and is essentially like what it would be outside with dirt underneath, and its *so far* helped with the theres dirt and coir everywhere mess.
