Currently I am building an outdoor enclosure for my CA Desert Tortoise and in the interim she is sleeping in an apple box inside the house. Should I cover her box while she sleeps?

Another idea for indoor enclosures is to place them well above floor level. The floor is a cold and drafty place.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Kara, and welcome to the Forum!

I place my hibernating tortoises in a box of shredded newspaper, then place the box up high off the floor.

Yes, cover up!!!! Keep tortoise safe!!!
I went to a presentation last night by Dr. Tom Greek as part of the OC CTTC monthly meeting and I just want to post the info here, just in case.
The good doctor had a picture of a desert tortoise WITHOUT A FRIGGEN HEAD! On a towel, head gone, blood! He said raccoons do that!
I cannot get that and a few other atrocities that have happened to his client's cares, out.of.me.head. Ugggh. Those images, yuk and soooo sad.
Maybe you do not have raccoons, maybe you do. I just wanted to share.
(Excuse my still freaking out about it. Please. And thank you).
