it looks good I'm guessing from your user name that you have at least a Russian tort. you may not have this problem, but mine burrow deep sometimes. be careful that they don't dig out from under the wood boards. oh, and you should give them a water dish! bathing in the sun is the best
very nice.. watch the height.. and the hides up against the sides.. mine climbs on his and he could climb right over your walls.. also along the bottom.. make is solid, they like to dig and can dig right out.
how many will you have in there?
A couple of good suggestions about preventing climbing out and digging under!
You can line the inside edge with pavers or cement caps; I get the 8"x16" and line them up. That helps prevent digging under the edge (thanks to Yvonne).
Perhaps a wood lip along the edge to prevent climbing out.
i have a giant water dish in it now that was when i was still building and i have bricks around the edges and hard clay around it so its hard for them to dig out
but thanks for the climbing tip ill do something about that i have three torts ramona(giant female) scooter(my male) and pogo(my little baby girl shes in the pic)
thanks for the improvement ideas i have read them all i have tarp under the dirt to keep them from digging out and chiken wire above the wood to keep them from going over is that ok?
Chicken wire.... Aside from that the enclosure is awesome! I can see multiple places they can climb and come out from and escape. Mine is climber and i swear i never thought mine could escape her enclosure but she sure did find a way.
This is a nice area for a single Russian. Russians are a roaming adventure loving species and will have one of the largest territories of any species. So a few questions for you.. is it always in the shade? This space will need a sunshiney spot for basking. It has to stay sunshiney for at a minimum of 2 to 3 hours during the day. Keep in mind that if there is only one basking spot with multiple torts you will have bickering and fighting as they all need the area for at least an hour in order to warm up. How many do you plan on putting in here? I know you want to breed your Russians. Do you have a separate area for nest digging that does not have the tarp underneath. Russian nests are often about 6 inches deep. The bigger the female the bigger the hole and greater the depth.
yes in the corner i have a mound of dirt ive read all the coments and im going into improvement mode
No more chinken wire plez help me with ideas for a top
better deep dirt for digging
lots of yummy weeds
great basking spots
more great hides
anymore ideas?
their are basking spots: the enclosure is under a tree house so when the sun is on either side it is nice and sunny
Hi,
I would use cinder block instead wood, because of them digging and escaping. We made ours at least 3 rungs high with 1 rung buried in the earth. Otherwise going to look great
I'm planting dandelions and eatible (sorry that's spelled wrong)
It's not done yet but..
(
Sorry about that
Eatible grass
If you could and have the money, I would your pen out of cement blocks. Make it 3 rung high with 1 rung in buried in the earth. Your size is perfect with alot of growth for a few more torts.
the enclosure looks very different now
im posting new pics
thanks for the idea so replace the wood with cinderblocks?
