Hello tortoise family. I've added a few torts to our family this week so I just thought I'd introduce them to you all.

#1. I got a baby Cherryhead from Jeff (N2torts) that arrived Thursday morning. A few of his scutes have batman symbol shapes on them so we decided to name it Bruce Wayne. Here are a few shots of him and my other Redfoot.

Tortoise #2
Today I met with Kelly (tortoise) and adopted this beautiful 11 year old male sulcata. His name was Angel but my wife is renaming him Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) I told her we had to keep the middle name as Angel. I put him on my scale abut it was very hard to balance him so I don't think it's accurate. The scale said 140 pounds but I'm betting it's more like 150-160.

I'm baby sitting a tort for the night. Mike Taylor lives about 40 mins from me and he wanted to adopt a male Redfoot from Kelly but didn't have the time to make the 4 hour road trip so I picked it up for him and he'll come get him tomorrow. (If I give him my address that is, lol). He's too cute to not put a picture of him up so....ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1407629819.291042.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1407629838.368455.jpg

I've got a temporary set up for my sulcata while I finish his permanent set up. I also went ahead and set one up for my overnight guest. My big guy has 18'x12' in his temp home with a nice size hide. Our guest is enjoying a 10'x10' area, also with a hide. ImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1407629994.859792.jpgImageUploadedByTortoise Forum1407630008.874281.jpg

Both have eaten and are tucked away in their hides

My wife and kids were out shopping for new school clothes all day and by the time they had dinner and made it home it was dark. No one even said hello to me or asked how I was doing :( they just went out back and said crap I guess we'll have to wait and see Hal Jordan in the morning. Now I told them a few times how big he was and even used a tape measure to say he's this long and this wide but apparently they have no concept of size. I told them they didn't have to wait and shined my flash light in his hide and they all freaked out and couldn't believe how huge he was. My wife just got a big grin on her face. my 12 year old son laughed and thanked the tortoise for making his lawn mowing duties easier and 20 month old son just has a look I shock on his face pointed at him and said turtle. My teenage daughter has no interest in torts but said this one was cool and wanted to show her friends. The 3 year old was a sleep and will see him for the first time this morning. I have some hibiscus flowers to make him dance. He must have been eating pot plants as a baby or something because this huge guy is super chill and laid back. Not a battering ram like most sullies.

Got it all set up thanks to mike and his son. All that's left is to dig out and pour his soak pond, build a door on his house and landscape. He ended up with more of my yard than originally planned but we had enough block so he go a space 30' wide by 18' deep.

I put a metal roof on Hals house today and buried all the conduit so I can wire up his heater before it starts getting cold.

I worry that the shelter will be awfully hot in the summer, right out in the open like that.

It's nice and cool. I used 2x4 construction and insulated it with R22 which is better than the walls in my house which at R19. The rigid foam in toms design is like an R5 or something small like that. The hottest I've seen it in there is 89 degrees and the outside temp was 102. I have a wireless weather station in there that let me know the temps and humidity. I put that there as a fail safe if the heater or thermostat quit working.

Plus that metal roof panel I used has a awesome reflective "solar white" paint on it. It is what I use at work for commercial construction.

Hello and welcome. You get more people welcoming you if you started your own thread. You've replied to one my old threads. Start a new threat and be sure to post some pics of your tort. :) we love pics.
