I personally think it's best that you do the research rather than asking us to do it. We can recommend different species for you but then I think you need to research their care. BUT...it's hard, IMHO, for us to recommend a specific tort for you. We don't know how you live...for example, do you live in Texas on a ranch with room for a Sulcata? Or do you live in an apartment in the city and need a small tort who will stay small. So I think it's hard for us to guess what kind of tort would be best for you specifically. Do you see what I mean? So you tell us something about you so we can recommend a specific species for you then you can research their care and we will help you with that.
What part of the country do you live in? What is the climate like? How much space do you have? Would you house it indoors or out? I think a lot of people will tell you Russian tortoises are an excellent first tortoise. They are on the small side (maybe 6-9 inches), relatively low maintainance compared to other species, extremely adaptable to a wide range of environmental conditions, and exceptionally sociable and interactive. That would probably be my recommendation.
