I will post this here since it has pics and that way I won't step on EP's cool story.

For anyone who wondered...
I have often wondered how much actual dirt an oil filter holds before going into bypass and just recirculating the dirty oil.
Kerry recently got a new car with a Nissan 3.5v6. I changed the original oil & filter at 2,000 miles and installed Mobil 1 & Fram TG6607 filter, one of those little ones.

We just returned from a trip with 7400 on the clock so I changed the oil again and weighed the new filter after filling it with new oil and compared it to the weight of the used filter filled with oil.

The difference was +/- 32 grams or 1.25 oz's.

Glad I didn't wait the 10,000 miles they all recomend today! Yikes!

FWIW the only stats found were from Fram and Purolator and coincidently show 32gms as their max capacity.

Okay, I know very little to nothing about a cars oil filter. So the oil goes thru the filter, so the filter can filter out dirt. Once the filter is full of dirt, then it's all dirty oil getting ran thru the oil system, however that part works.
But, isn't dirty oil, just less dirty, always going thru anyway, as no filter is going to catch 100%?
Or is it that once the filter is full of dirt, the oil doesn't even go thru the filter at all, cuz it's full?
Also, because dirty oil is likely always running thru, just less dirty, is it really that bad?
I was always told if the color of oil is really dark, like you can't see any original color, then it's past due. That's for anyone that doesn't know the last time it was changed.

Hey, highly tuned inline 4's with turbos going 10K between oil changes sounds like a plan for obsolescence. LOL

Wholeheartedly agree.....even with Mobil 1.....3-4000 miles

New oil is cheaper than scored bearings any day
