I dont like telling non reptile people anymore because everyone asks the same questions over and over again. Family/friends are the worst because they will ask the same questions every time I see them.

For me it is, I've only been in that situation a couple times and that was in grade school. Close friends will say to me "arent they boring?" but thats just because they try to get under my skin and I just laugh it off. It just gets my blood boiling whenever they come over and ask what type of tortoise is that when I have showed them the same exact tortoise dozens of times and they still ask each and every time they are at my place lol.

No more boring than hitting spending all day hitting little white balls with a funny stick over 18 different lawns.

"oh those get big, don't they?"
"so... what do they do?"
".....cool"
"don't they have salmonella?"

*sigh*
silly non-reptile people :)

The only thing I have a problem with is that every morning, before it gets warm enough to put him outside for the day, I go out and pick greens from the front lawn for Carl..... My neighbors stare at me in my pjs, picking leaves :p

Most of my friends are pretty indifferent about me owning tortoises. I get very excited about them and they're mostly just "eh, we have a cat/dog."

My family is the same way. Bring my brothers beagle over and they go crazy, but getting them interested in my tortoises is like pulling teeth.

Have you ever showed them a tortoise eating? My non-tortoise loving friends seem to love seeing him eat. Apparently it's beyond hysterical.

I once had a friends child upon seeing Walter scream "MOM! Its a tortoise! A REAL tortoise". He'd never seen a real tortoise, he was so curious that he even let Walter bite him because he wanted to know how much it would hurt. Adults usually ask the same boring questions, ending with "aren't they smelly/dirty/carry diseases?".

My two best girlfriends think my torts are adorable ! But, they have no idea of the research or care that goes into keeping them! I guess I didn't really tell anyone else ...

Typically boys/men are just interested in big torts and sometimes hatchlings, and girls/women are just interested in cute little babies. At least thats what it seems like in my experience.

@Mgridgaway- I bet if you to show your buddies a 30 inch plus sulcata, aldabra, or galap they would be climbing all over it.\

Also most people like when torts are mating. All my friends always want to see mating videos of mine lol.

Yep, that's pretty accurate. A lot of people love the hatchlings but when they're juveniles no one cares.

If only MD had nice enough weather to keep larger tort without spending a ton of money and keeping it indoors for 6 months of the year :(

I was at a home and garden store trying to find a light fixture, and I have NO IDEA when it comes to electronics, so the guy asked me what I needed it for and I said it was for a tortoise enclosure and he just squinted and looked at me funny, like maybe I was joking or something... That's usually the reaction I get.

Haha. Back in the day of breeding pythons I bought an old fridge at a church yard sale so convert into an incubator...they had a fit when they found out my intentions of gutting it and what for. Then came the guys at Home Depot wide eyed as to why a woman would want to cut the insides of a fridge door out. THEN came the repair centers I called to get the freon taken out and disposed of. It was a good time being reminded "ma'am...you don't change that like you do your oil ya know?"

As far as torts... Not much although if my neighbors hear me "oh look, it's outside time!!! Look at our seeds growing!!" in my underwear on the porch as i hold Echo in my hands and carry her out one more time I'll be reported.

I don't talk about it often, but when I do, some people find it quite interesting. Others may not be interested, but no one has told me they think it's boring or stupid or anything like that. :)

I got one of my best friends a Russian tort and all it's set up for her birthday so we could talk and talk about our torts and turtles together but when I mention my turtles/tort to my coworkers I get the "turtle soup" remarks!!! :(:( I think they say it to shut me up about them but it's so awful to even think of such a thing or say so about someone's pets.
