Hi i own a russian tortoise and a baby sulcata. Every time i go to petsmart i see 4 or 5 red eared sliders and 2 painted turtles in a 2'by 1' tank with only 1" of water... I feel really bad...

Are you looking to purchase the water turtles or are you simply sharing their plight?

If you are in the mind set to buy some---then they would likely be grateful to come to a new home...and if worried about their conditions then perhaps you can gently share a few quick tips with the pet stop...

I was hoping to buy but im not sure im ready...although im aware of the stuff that they need, and their poor living condition,. my parents are divorced and ive been with my mom but mom's never been real good at aquatics. I see my dad about twice a week. My dad is an expert and has a small octopus,a mini stingray and 5 other tanks full of nothing but coral and brightly colored fish. Like pufferfish, seahorses and lion fish. He also has a few freshwatertanks too...but no turtles...

i<3 my torts
Donatello: sulcata tortoise
Torty: russian tortoise

Don't buy them.

Why support that type of practice? Why spend your time, money, etc. when they will just order new ones to replace the animals that you "saved?"

We have to stop this outlook. We are not saving anything, if we open up a tank spot for the same amount of turtles to replace the ones we've purchased. I think the vast majority of those who "save" turtles from pet shops don't even keep them correctly anyway.

Sorry to be critical, but the pet trade, especially with pet stores like these and our support of them, give us all a bad name as keepers.

Consider about ordering a turtle from a breeder who can provide you with a healthy animal and the follow along support that it takes to keep that specific species healthy and happy. I'd love to give you the contact information for breeders whom have dozens of species in stock. Perhaps we can even find sources in Illinois.
