Hi, I am new to the forum. I have a question about my American Land Tortoises. I have 2 the same age, 6 years. they have never hibernated. I always kept them inside during the winter. now I want to have them hibernate. they stay outside all the time, they have their own house on the concrete patio with a heating element in it. What would be the procedure to make sure they prepare for hibernation since they have never done so before? I have an elderly tortoise that goes down without any problem every year and wakes up just like clockwork. thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello and welcome! First thing I am going to do, is to ask you to post some pictures of your tortoises if you would please. The reason is for us to know exactly what kind of tortoise (or turtle even for that matter) you may have. Many could fit the name American land tortoise and I would hate for us to give you any wrong information.

Russians would not be called American.
After the DTs (which there are a few), I was thinking of the fact that some folks call box turtles, tortoises. Which could also mean other turtles like the wood turtle might be miscalled tortoise too. Just better safe then sorry just playing the guessing game.
You would be surprised at what some folks call tortoise I know I have heard lots of silly things....so those were the two that came to mind
