Hey Everyone,
I have been seriously thinking of owning a redfoot now, and I've done extensive research on them. I've taken notes on multiple care sheets and only have a few questions left before I make my decision! First, how much do you know to feed, whether it is a baby or a juvenile ( I'm not looking for an adult right now). Also, where can you adopt or purchase redfoots? And lastly, are they a fun species to look after, are they lively, fun to observe?

Thank you! :)

There are some breeders on this site that can help you. As for whether they are good torts, yes! They have a lot of personality and mine always seem very happy. I do have one little shy guy, but the rest are very outgoing. :)

Welcome. Redfoots are a great tortoise to start with. They are very mediu
Sized easy to feed and care for. They grow at a steady pace and have wonderful personalities. I have 22 redfoots from numerous different countries and they all have one similarity alike, there awesome. There's lots of breeders me being one. But I recommend trying to find an adoption before a purchase, if that fails there's lots of wee ones available out there.

How much to feed? There are lots of ways to look at this, but the easiest is that it is almost impossible to overfeed them on what should be the biggest part of their diet- greens, flowers, mushrooms, some veggies, etc.- things that are low in carbs and nutrients overall. Then, we tightly limit the high carb, high nutrient things like pellets, meats, fruits, and sweet/juicy veggies.

Adopt or purchase? My two biggest recommendations would be either one of the breeders here (there are many good ones!) or a local herp expo where you can see your options.

Fun and lively? As tortoises go- yes. As pets in general go- no. Tortoises like to hide, and once they are acclimated to their habitat, will pretty much hide all day unless they are eating, sunning or exploring. They also do not really exhibit emotions like you would see in small mammals, and really don't particularly like to be touched or played with.

I agree with just about everyone here this morning. I put down the food and take it away in about 30 minutes. Sometimes if they do not come out right away, then I leave it..but generally when 1 is out eating it sparks the rest to get on board. When I move them outside (which will be in a few days)...I will feed them less, because they have edible plants in the enclosure. Once you have 1 your will get a better gauge on it.

There are several breeders on this forum, who have exceptional Redfoots. Like Tortidise said, you will just have to pick out the type you want. She has them from different countries..each one is just a little different in appearance but not by care.

I have the Brazilian Cherryheads... I believe AllegraF has a few to sell. This is who I purchased my last two from and am thinking about another....

Good Luck to you, and don't forget the pictures when you decide.
