Hi, is it normal for a Hermanns tortoise to suddenly have a patch of what looks like new (raw?) skin on his head? It's a tiny piece that seems missing but it's noticable.1000039624.jpg

Hello and welcome. Is that Crediton in Devon where you live ? I live in Devon, near Holsworthy.
I don't think the bit of skin is a problem - it looks like a scale has come off -perhaps caught on something, or perhaps that there is a new one already growing underneath. It happens all the time as tortoises grow.
Zola is 23, but this still happens with him.

Thanks Angie, that's reassuring. Yes, we live in beautiful Devon. Nice to connect with a fellow Devonian (although I'm from continental Europe actually!)

Hello again -it's good to know there's someone else here in Devon. I guessed you weren't originally from Devon, though, because of your name. An extra welcome to you and Franklin, anyway, because you are Devonians now.
Zola is a Hermanns too, and we got him in Okehampton when he was a baby. At that time, there was very little useful information around about tortoise keeping - especially about babies. You are fortunate to have found this forum - I wish it had existed when we got him -there is so much to learn from people who have a great deal of experience and knowledge - and who are always willing to help.
Best wishes from Angie.

Aw, cute!! Yes, great to be in contact with other Hermanns owners, I'm a complete beginner 🫣 Big hugs to you and Zola, hope he's doing well!

What a sweetie. I've never taken Franklin out before. Quite terrified of him not feeling happy, getting a disease, eating something he shouldn't etc. I'll try to get him out into the garden this summer, he must be bored of his enclosure.

Zola has an unusual life, as we take him out with us every day, and have done since he was little. If you are interested, I wrote a long post called - Please welcome Zola - on Oct 20th, 2020 -which will explain how he came to have rather an odd lifestyle. I think it's in the thread called Introductions.
I think it would certainly be good to get Franklin out in the summer into the garden, but you would have to watch him every second, of course. He would benefit from the sun and fresh air - you could keep him in something he wouldn't be able to escape from - a little paddling pool - empty, obviously - with a bit covered over for shade, or a large shallow box. It would keep him safe and away from anything dangerous.
This is what the photo was meant to look like - sorry!
Angie
