I see a lot of them for that price.

Really? Maybe it's because you are up north. I think the most I have seen around here is $119 and that was retail. Most on Craigslist are under $100. Still haven't come across the mythical $25 sulcata I've heard about.

Make sure you let us know if or when you find that $25.00 one. I don't think it will be long and you will be able to find it:). Yes, sometimes on Craigslist and sometimes on fauna or kingsnake.

Haha. Back in 2005, Tomato was $120. Now they're $25.00 - huge wow!

I kind of want another from just hatched but I really am trying to stick to Boxies and Leopards.

I think it totally depends on youre location....I imagine in Arizona they are a dime a dozen! Up here in Boston, I can sometimes find some on Craigslist for under $100, which is a good deal.

Personally, when it comes to pets I don't mind forking out some cash, made me think twice before making such a commitment, I paid $225 for my guy .it makes people think twice about the purchase. Because they don't always think about the commitment!!. Just my opinion.[SMILING FACE WITH SMILING EYES][FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]

Oh I don't mind forking out the cash but I don't know this person at all or how he cares for them. I do know the breeders on here freely speak about care etc. we know there healthy. I'm not paying 150 for a baby when I can get two for 170 shipped knowing there healthy. Does that makes since?

Shelly do they ship? Also do you know they are healthy and cared for properly? If so can I get there contact info?

That's wholesale when you buy them in 1000+ plus lots. Guess how many people have lots that big to sell... :p

$150-$180 is a pretty normal price for a real live brick and mortar retail store, and I think its reasonable given the overhead they incur, and given that it allows a person to literally see and touch the animal they will spend the next few DECADES caring for. People who know better can buy them directly from a good breeder, but there is nothing wrong with supporting a local business and getting to hand pick your own little baby tortoise.

It is a pet peeve of mine when people fuss over a few bucks on the purchase price of a tortoise. They live for decades, perhaps centuries, so what difference does a few bucks make, if you are getting the healthiest animal you can find? It will cost far more than the purchase price to house, feed and care for a tortoise in just the first year too. Nobody wants to overspend, but I think too much emphasis is placed on the original purchase price.

I can't even count the number of times somebody has bought from some unknown, unreliable internet warehouse place because they were $10 cheaper than me on shipping, and then they end up paying $100s of dollars on vet bills down the road and end up with a dead baby anyway because it was started too dry in the first place. If it wasn't so mean and inappropriate, Id really like to ask them if it as worth saving ten bucks to go through that.

Tortoise people of the world: Don't worry about the price of that baby tortoise. Worry about the HEALTH and QUALITY of that baby!

... okay. End rant. Thank you for your time. :)

Tom knows this species and price points. Most I see are around 70-80 I've also seen them at 150-180 in other parts of the country where they are less common mostly cuz of weather... Anyways I can get them for 45 still can if I wanted. Buddy if mine gets babies in lots and sells them to me for cheap. Actually don't know if he still does but I know a local pet shop that has them at 50

Hello from Arizona, yes my Daughter got 2 Sulcata Hatchlings for $25.00 each just a month ago. One was supposed to go to a friend, but that friend changed their mind when they saw how big and how much work they would be. They do range in price around here. A friend of hers just paid $130 each, one from a local pet store and another was direct from a breeder. I think my Daughter and her friend are going to regret getting 2 each, but it was their decision.

Here's the Craigslist search on Sulcata for Phoenix area:

Tom I completely agree with the point you are making. But this guy is only on Craigslist from what he said and hadn't answered any of my questions except a couple. I finally told him I wanted to go pick them up locally but at his price and not knowing any of the questions I had asked I would go else where where I know I'm getting a healthy baby and the price is better.

Yes it costs a lot to have torts and care for them. So I'm trying to save what I can to create & grow what they need to thrive and grow properly & still get another baby. If I couldn't find a good breeder or hobbyist for less than $150 I'd spend that much but this isn't the case & this guy seemed to know that lol

Thanks for all your help today Tom you Rick!!![WINKING FACE]

Pet stores here range from $70 to $100 never seen them for more around here any way. But they are worth more they are amazing torts & I love them my point was just that I couldn't believe this guy couldn't answer and then complained about having to many. Also trying to sell on Craigslist for a higher price then the local pet shop who gets them direct from a breeder is just silly to me.

I COMPLETELY AGREE! You take big chances on good breeder or bad breeder. And these forums are a great place to find known Good Breeders.

I looked at several of the ads just out of curiosity and many were scarey. Habitats didn't look right, etc. And yes, tons of ads for hatchlings.

For me, if I had space... All the reasons not to adopt them are the reasons I would, if I could.

Can't save them all.

Thanks,
Shelly
