Helloooo everyone, how you all doing on this beautiful Arizona day??
Last minute road trip, we have taken Fred one other time. I think it was hard for him. He didn't show it but I think he was. We stay in a hotel usually for 5 days and I know the ride stresses my cat out. But here's the question my mother in law said she would watch him, feed him 2 times a day and give him fresh water. The only thing is he's not going to be soaked for the time we're gone. I Soaked him before we left. But now I am worried about him because I do things the way I do them and he's used to me. Is he going to be ok?? I feel so bad.

He will be fine.
Tortoises are resilient, and while he will notice things are different, and he may protest a little by being less social, he will be just fine. As long as he has clean water in his enclosure, all is well.

Really bad would be dragging him along in a noisy car, bouncing rattled around and chilled or overheated, in a smaller container, etc. That would just be cruel. He will be MUCH happier at home in his own digs.

Enjoy your trip.

Thank you soo much you eased my mind, my husband is going to be happy you sent that reply. He won't have to listen to me every 5 minutes saying I'm worried about Fred. Anyways thank you

I used to worry when I had to go somewhere, too, even just overnight. They really are happier in their home.
There are lots of tortoises that only get soaked once or twice per week. Fred will be fine. The only danger is that torts are so addictive your Mom-in-Law may want to keep him!

Have fun.

I agree with COmtnLady. In the old days, many people didn't soak them at all, ever, mistakenly believing they were "desert" animals and needed bone dry hot conditions to prevent shell rot and respiratory infection. Have Mom give him a slice of cucumber for some extra hydration while you are gone. Fred will not complain.

This is the beauty of reptile pets. They don't care if you are there or not, as long as their basic needs are met. You can travel all you like!
