So i was strolling along at a pet store just looking around because i need to by a calcium supplement for my redfoot tortoise. And i see this almost adult sized russian tortoise in a 15-20 gallon tank. and but its hideout takes up so much space on one side of the tank that the tortoise cant even walk around it and not to mention its so small the tortoise cant even walk under it because its that small. and the water bowl takes up half the size of the other side of the tank and it cant even walk around it or anything. i dont even think the tortoise can climb inside of the water bowl. but the tank is like extremely small for this tortoise and it cant walka round its stuck in the middle of the tank because the hut and the water bowl take up both sides of the tank and there so big he cant even walk around it.

and she is trying to sell it for $89 and the shell looks horrible. now ive been to this pet store before and she didnt have the tortoise before so i know she didnt doing anything to the shell or anything but the least she can do is give it a decent sized tank to walk around. i wanted to give her "crap" about it but i kept my mouth shut.

but cant i report it since its a pet store, and have the police or animal patrol check out its living condition?

like i know its a pet store and there not going to give a tortoise a huge tank but you would think they give it enough space to walk around. i went to another pet store and told a guy about it and he said the lady doesnt know alot about reptiles. so my question is why hell is she selling them then. its not even a petco or petsmart its like somone pet places called all about pets.

RE: Russian tortoise in pour condition

You should have not kept your mouth shut and said something. Go back and explain the conditions in a nice manner to the store manager. Let them know that they are asking a lot of money for a tort in bad living conditions and bad shell conditions. Give them a chance to correct things. If they don't then call animal care and control.

Everyone should try to remember that pet stores are in the business to sell things and make a buck. That's why they're there. If they can provide good quality housing for the animals they sell, more power to them, but 9 times out of 10, there just isn't the space available to provide a nice, big habitat for each tortoise they sell. The tortoise needs a hiding place and a waterer, and if the store owner has room to make a bigger habitat that's great. But I'm sure they'd rather sell the animal than try to make it comfortable.

And there's nothing wrong with that!

Its temporary until the animal gets sold.
