Hi All, I am new to owning a tortoise (6 months old Hermann). I am getting prepared for its arrival - Sun 9 Feb.

Is the tong in the attached photo suitable for scouping baby tortoise poop?

Thank you,
Mitul (UK)

I have never tried anything like that, I have used a kitty litter scooper.

I just use a little plastic butter knife cause my baby's poo is smaller than a pea

It may work but I just use a scoop and old cooking fish slice and a spare dish to carry it on. You may find them useless in time.
If your new to tortoise husbandry then share the tortoise species and care sheets can be linked to you . To thrive they need a good correct set up and regular care Inc diet, calcium, soaks, heat, light and water.

Hello and welcome from a fellow uk member! As touched on above be sure to have the correct set up ready beforehand, care advice can be very outdated here and places will often sell the complete wrong stater set ups.

Hopefully you’ll find this useful to go over! this thread covers correct equipment(uvb, heating bulbs, lighting etc, stores tend to sell the wrong bulbs so I’d double check), correct levels, importance of a closed chamber for younger tortoises(only way to maintain the humidity you need), appropriately maintaining the humidity, safe substrates, there’s lots of visual examples for everything, and a really handy diet link to check out! If ever going with a greenhouse, the lower the ceiling height, whilst still allowing for recommended bulb height, the better! But I’ll add some more ideas below for closed chambers, a sealed vivarium is the best starter choice

This includes different closed chamber options, as I say, vivs are a pretty good stater choice

Lastly, this one here is probably most important to go over and keep on hand, it’ll help you avoid the wrong bulbs, substrates, housing etc, I always encourage double checking purchases on the forum too before buying😊

Hope they come in handy! Please always feel free to ask any further questions! Welcome to the forum🐢💚
