Shell question

I recently read that tortoises are sensitive to touch, pain, heat, cold, and other stimuli because of their innervated skin and shells. I was wondering what kinds of advantages an innervated shell would give them in terms of things like survival? Are there specific benefits to being able to sense with their shell?
