sleeping?

my russian tort seems to be sleeping and eating alot..i read up on hibernation and it is fall here in indiana, is she going into hibernation? if so what should i do for her?

well the first question is she healthy enough for hibernation? you should never hibernate a sick tort. i never hibernated my russians and they are just fine if you don't want her to hibernate just bumb up the cage temps a little bit to trick her into thinking its still summer.

yes she is healthy, i just worry because she has been doing nothing but eating and sleeping this past week.

she eats still twice a day, and she soaks herself..but she has been sleeping...ALOT.

I don't think there is anything to worry about. Activity-levels goes up and down all the time. Variations in the weather and time of year can have an impact on the torts behaviour also. I guess they also feel the differences in air pressure etc.

Last week one of my torts slept in his baskingspot all day. Ate, and slept at night. The last three days he's been hyperactive... He's wierd, and that's normal for a tortoise

Just to be sure, you should check the temperatures in your torts enclosure.

It's that time of year again where everyone's russians seem to start slowing down. If it's warm and toasty, he won't hibernate, he'll brumate. He'll just get lazy and sleep way more than usual. It's totally okay for her, just make sure she's eating/drinking and pooping regularly.

This is the time of year I replace the UVB bulbs. It helps. Only Olga has been hiding because Uncle Vanya is enjoying the autumn sunshine and trying to ensure the continuation of the species.

That's a good idea. I replace mine in the spring... but I can see how well that could work out
