Hi, I just received the spagnum moss I ordered, and it is light beige and medium beige. Is that really old moss or is that the colour range? I thought it was green? Also, do I soak it like I would coir first ?

Sounds normal in color to me. I usually separate and remove any foreign materials like sticks, leaves etc. while at the same time, teasing apart the strands of moss. This fluffs up the moss and makes it a nice place to burrow for the torts.

Not sure what type of tortoise you have, but I wouldn't soak the moss. I usually give it a good spray with a spray bottle. I use CHEs in my setup and their heat usually helps this water turn into humidity. This is all just my opinion.

The sphagnum moss that you buy is dead. It's been dried to reduce water content, thereby reducing weight and fitting more in a bag. Contact with water rehydrates it. Live moss is green and stays together better.
