in spring mix, which is the one with a pink/purple kind of stem? my tort has been eating all the others first and leaving those until she realizes she's hungry again and they're there.

i think they are either baby beet or turnip greens. Just a guess though being new to this.

Red chard. High in oxalic acid and personally I pick it out (but my tort doesn't like it either), although many will feed it. I just feed it to the family and give my tort lower oxalic acid greens. What I would be careful of is say you are feeding half spring mix and half something else high in oxalic acid, but half of your spring mix is chard and/or spinach, then you are really feeding more oxalic acid than you may realize. Variety in spring mix really varies, so its best to identify all the greens so you know what you are getting (I have found stuff not listed on the package actually in there, for example spinach...when its only supposed to be the other way around, in that they are allowed to list more than is actually in there).

100g of Swiss chard has 0.65mg of oxalates, beet greens have .61, and spinach is .68- which puts them on my 'watch' list.

My personal policy is to not worry too much about it under about .50, avoid things over about 1.0, and offer a very small pinch of calcium when using things in the middle.

Of course you can avoid all the oxalate worry by switching to ReadyPac's Santa Barbara Mix...it contains ONLY endive, escarole and radicchio;)

I pick out the chard too, as well as spinach if that's in the particular brand I purchase. Sometimes I pick out the mizuna too, but I don't find that often.

I found CLOVER in my spring mix the other week (obviously in there by accident.) I was soo bummed that it ended up in MY salad, covered in olive oil. Nelson would have loved it!!
