We hooked up a webcam for Trevor today. I'm not sure if I'm going to be making it public since it's mostly for me to spy on him, etc. It's hooked up to our house network so I'm not sure about how much traffic it could handle. But, I just wanted to share the news! I was really excited to be able to check on him from work, and all my coworkers got a kick out of seeing our office mascot as I've taken to call him (we have a very small office group!).

If I do make it public I'll be sure to let everyone know. :)

If anyone is wondering, the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 makes a great tort cam. I got it as a gift (from my boss, along with a raise yesterday--score!), but it retails for $75. It's a very good buy for the price, although I wish it was wireless. The wireless ones are a lot more, so for the casual user it's great. It'll probably serve our purposes. It even auto zooms!

My fiance and friend hooked it up, so I actually have no clue about how it works, so excuse my ignorance. hehe

I know we have quite a few tort cam owners on this site.

Matt keeps threatening that he wants to hook up 2 cameras-- one to look in on Charlie and one attached to Charlie so we can see the world from his point of view!!-- I keep nodding my head and woundering how we would get anything done if he did-- we would be watching all day!

It is very addicting--most of my office spent a significant portion of the day spying on the little guy! I found out he goes in his water a lot more than I thought--we counted a few times at least today. I guess I don't really need to soak him anymore besides to clean him up a little.

Kate, do you have to keep your computer open all day long? What program are you using?

Yes I have to keep the computer on (I close the lid on my laptop and have it set up that it stays in with the lid closed). I've mostly done it just while I'm at work, so right before I leave up until I get home and want to us my computer. We have teo other computers in the house though. I'm using a downloaded program that my friend set up called webcamxp that hooks up to the house network, so if we get too many viewers we could have bandwidth problems (but this is mostly when we're not home and if it was a problem we'd shut it off). I like that we're mostly doing it for ourselves although a few coworkers and family members have the link, so I don't feel obligated to turn it on if I don't want to.

free for private use (so besides the cam with was a gift so I didn't spend money on it, I spent no money on this project!)

What kind of webcam do you want to set up for Hermy, Isa?

Thanks for the info Kate, I will check the program out. I did not know I could close my Laptop and keeping it on at the same time, I will try to do it. I am not sure about the webcam I want. I was thinking of logitech, but I dont know which one yet, I will see the ones they have in stock and will check if there is a big difference between the wireless and the one with the wire.
By the way, congratulations for the raise :D.

I could get free or pay web hosting if we decide having it on our network slows it down too much. Camstreams is the only site I found through a search that is still up and running for free hosting of webcams, in case anyone is interested.
