Temp gun use

I have now ordered a temp gun to make sure the temps in Terry's indoor enclosure are bang on, I was just wondering how best to use it? An I looking for the temperature at 'ground' level or where the shell would be? I've been using digital thermometers but I'm not trusting the readings too much as they vary quite a bit, hence the temp gun. Thanks

For setting my basking temps, I like to measure the temperature at tortoise height. I like to put a brick or tortoise sized rock directly under the heat lamp for a couple of hours and then check the temperature. If its too high I raise the fixture, or lower the wattage, and vice versa if its too cool.
