SO tessa is sick with either a uri or pneumonia . She was prescribed
.15 ccs of fortaz every three days for 7 injections. Does this sound right for a 2.5 yr old 1.5 pounds tortoise. Just worried since this is a new vet since i wasnt very pleased with my old one. They wanted to do a vitamin/mineral injection but i declined because of seeing what that did to my russian one time. Pro please chime in.

I'm not a pro but I know not to ever allow a vitamin injection...

It's very easy Candy to overdose a tortoise with an injection containing vitamin A. To much vitamin A will make all the skin slough off and leave red oozing patches in it's place. It kills the skin and makes it fall off inviting bacteria to have a field day. :(

Exactly why i declined it and it seemed like that vet got insulted but whatever. I actually just called and requested a call from the vertrinarian owner of the practice to explain what went on. So im waiting for a call back.

Yer a show off...next time I'll do the explaining...and I think that the skin sloughs off not from an injection of too much vit A, I think it's any amount makes the skin slough off...don't you think?

I just wanted to say that if it was any amount than my male boxie would be skinless ;) He's had multiple Vitamin A injections over the past 3 years (my vet always does a little less than the recommended dose so as to not OD) and he's just fine. In fact he should be waking up from hibernation soon. Now, I have never had to have either of my tortoises injected - or taken to the vet for that matter, but I don't think it would be too different?

No it's just overdosing Maggie :p When you go above what the liver can store, the excess vitamin A goes into the blood stream and makes the cells swell and rupture. With chelonians it attacks the skin cells in particular.
