Use a digital infrared thermometer. These give very accurate readings, and all you have to do is point them at the ground and it gives the temperature. Disk thermometers can vary up to 10 degrees F. You can get very inexpensive ones on amazon.

I use a combo one that actually for a house ( along with the heat gun already mentioned). The ones built for houses actually are more accurate and last longer. Most pet brands break easily.

Acurite also have these indoor - outdoor with humidity readings for both.Picture 2884.jpg If you have a larger enclosure you could put both units in different areas to see the readings of both areas.This one is reading inside an aquarium housing hatchling box turtles over winter.
