right now i have a 2 year female leopard and a male russian tortoise. would LOVE to get a sulcata or redfoot, but i've come to realize i couldnt provide either with the proper care. i live in massachusetts so i usually have snow on the ground 4 months of the year.

i reeally want to get a hatchling and i know they are harder to care for. i'm considering getting a pancake, eastern box turtle or three toed box turtle.

i couldn't find a great care sheet for pancakes but from what i grasped i could keep them similar to a russian? also, i've read that they live in colonies, would it be better to get a pair?

i'm really interested in the box turtles, but know NOTHING about them. i'm currently doing reseach and figured this is a good step. again, i don't plan on purchasing the baby for maybe a year.

ANY info you can give me will be much appreciated!

In terms of environment, pancakes share their range with babcocki leopard tortoises, so heat and humidity settings can be the same as with your leopard (dont house them together though).

Pancakes love to climb, hide, and lodge themselves into rocky crevices though. So a pancake enclosure will typically features lots of hides and rocks. Since they can use vertical space, in my opinion you need less floor space than you would with another tortoise of a similar size.

A Pancake would be really awesome! From what I've gathered, a Box Turtle has similar heat and humidity requirements as Red Foots. They are quite a bit smaller so housing them indoors would be less space consuming. But if your worried about not being able to care for a Red Foot properly (unless it's a space issue) I don't think a Box Turtle is the way to go.

they're just so interesting!! the more research i do, the more i fall in love with them! and i have really good ideas and access to great materials for a perfect pancake enclosure. they're the perfect size and their care needs already match my leopard tortoise.

I'm not a potential owner for maybe a year but i see online that hatchlings range from 200$-500$. are breeders prices any different? and i live in Massachusetts, is there any restriction on pancakes? i get the feeling they are rare....

yeah, my problem with the red foot is the constant humidity they require their entire life...and their size. my tortoises are inside roughly half the year due to snow on the ground. i can definitely provide a closed chamber for hatchlings. one more thing, do they do better in pairs? i could do two if they would benefit from each others company. obviously having one it would get the single child treatment but i can easily provide care for 2 :) though i would never plan on breeding.
