It's Winter break, I'm out of school and off work for the week, and for some reason all I've been doing is watching videos and reading about tortoise care.

If the members of this forum would be so kind, I'd love to ask a few questions.

1. Did you purchase/adopt your tortoise as a hatching-yearling or as an adult?

2. Did you have a particular shell color or pattern in mind?
a. How did your expectations compare to your new baby?

3. Did you have a particular gender in mind?
a. How did that work out for you?

Ok, I’ll bite:

1. Did you purchase/adopt your tortoise as a hatching-yearling or as an adult?
— as a hatchling from @Lancecham - a perfect baby Sully with imperfect scutes

2. Did you have a particular shell color or pattern in mind? not really

3. How did your expectations compare to your new baby? Everything was perfect

4. Did you have a particular gender in mind? Nope, all the same

5. How did that work out.. all just fine.

1. I purchased him as a hatchling from an independent pet store.
2. No. I had no expectations. I fell in love with him in the store. It was almost an impulse buy except that I had been considering a box turtle earlier so would have probably ended up with something shelled when I found my sulcata.
3. No particular gender. Didn't really think about it but assumed he was a boy from the beginning and was proved right.
It worked out fine! I never regretted my decision, unlike how I felt about the iguana we got for my son.

1. I bought my hatchling Sulcata straight from a reputable breeder.

2. Nope, I just wanted a healthy tort.
I did lots of research to choose what type of tort was right for me and then did tons of research on that type. I was very prepared and knew exactly what to expect.

3. Nope, no matter what gender my tort turns out, I'll be happy cause I get to watch my prehistoric looking tort roam my yard.

1. Hatchling 1 month old leopard tortoise at a reptile expo.
2. I did a lot of research but I was content with the leopard tortoise patterns in general. My baby has been a real handful. When you think of torts you think this will be really easy, but it’s super hard especially when you think you know what you are doing but come to find out all the info you got was wrong! (Before I found this forum)
3. I would like a girl, but my tort is to young to tell lol. So I don’t mind either way at this point just a healthy tort is all I ask.

Hmmmm....

1) I bought my red foot as a baby from a reputable breeder.

2) I had been doing research on a new pet tortoise for around 2 years before I got her. I was not a very good pet owner as a kid, and I promised that I would give her the best life that i possibly could. The only trait I selected for was a dark beak! So I was easily pleased. She is my dream pet, and I love her like my baby!

3) Didn't think about gender. If she turns out to be a male, I'll be just as happy.

Yes, I raised all but one from babies.

I have 2.3 sulcatas.
2.3 South African Leopards.
6.6.2 stars.

And I'm housing a few others for a friend.

Yes! I don't know if they can ever be completely tame and they are dangerous! When we first got him, it was very difficult to handle him because his nails were so sharp. Getting hit with the tail really hurts. Once they get big, it could really do some damage. We gave him away within a year.
