Mine has only done this once while I happen to be watching her luckily but wanted to know if being on there back can affect them or can hurt them other than not being able to drink or eat....just curious

I don’t quite understand what your Asking.
Do you mean being flipped upside down?
If so, tortoise has a large lung area and air sac space which fills the top portion of the shell space. When the tortoise is on its back, the liver, stomach and intestinal tract fall into this space because of gravity, thus compromising the animals ability to breathe,

If it flips over, chances are it'll be able to right itself. If left upside down for a very long period of time, it CAN suffocate. But only if it can't right itself for a very long time. Most tortoises can end up righting themselves though, so it isn't a huge deal..

If they tip over while out in the direct sun, they can rapidly become overheated to the point of death. This is especially true in the summers in the southeastern US and probably the southwest as well. It is kind of similar to infants and young children overheating and dying in closed up cars.

I so disagree...(with love and respect)...I have never ever had a tortoise who could turn back over...maybe hatchlings...but not adults...my box turtles used to be able to flip back over, but I think they are too big now...anyway...in MY experience...adult tortoises can NOT flip back over...

Ok wow, thanks so much for disagreeing so people know better. My russians can flip over and I had a couple box turtles that could, I guess there are many species that are unable! Glad you corrected, even if it is just your experience people still need to know that it is possible/ or even likely. Thanks again..

I kinda think that Russians are a different kind of tortoise...they are Sulcata in a small body....BIG personalities and trouble makers...in a small shell....
