Hey guys,

Haven’t been here in a while due to exams etc. When the weathers nice in the UK, I do take my tortoise out in the garden as he really likes the weeds / dandelions in the garden. I always supervise being cautious of magpies, crows etc. However I wanted to see if I could leave him out for a bit and someone suggested bird netting however I am afraid my tort will start eating it and he did that with the artificial plastic flowers we put in when he was younger. Does anyone have any suggestions what else I could use or do you think I should just use bird netting?

He’s now nearly 3 and half years old! Hes a hermanns tortoise

Once they are about 4 inches, birds won't mess with them.

Make sure the tortoise is in an enclosure and make sure the enclosure is escape proof and always has shade available.

you can buy portable pens, something like this:

for limited outdoor use, just make sure they always have access to shade and cool temps if you put this in the sun. Like maybe cover a portion of it with something plus a hide under that shaded cover

I like this cage for babies, but it needs a visual barrier around the bottom. You'd need at least two of them together for a 4 inch tortoise.

I think these types of cages, if suitably sized, are a great way to keep a tortoise contained, and safe from dogs and other predators. I also like that they are portable and can be moved around to new areas for fresh grazing areas, or moved more into or out of the shade depending on the weather. Good idea!
