I know that some flea/tick control meds for dogs/cats are toxic to torts. Does anyone know of a safe flea medication? Can my dogs use frontline or advantage?

I'm concerned about the dog poop. Ralph has eaten some in the past (in the past and currently my dogs have not been on flea meds, only baths). I'm pretty good about cleaning up after the dogs when they go, but there is that occasional one poop that I miss. Of course Ralph will always find that one.

Can you give me some suggestions? My dogs are going in for bathing on Monday and I will pick up some stuff that is suggested.

Thanks.

Okay, so I just called my exotics vet and he said that Advantage and Frontline are okay (in the off chance that Ralph eats the poop). But he would actually trust Advantage more.

Any insight on this?

It's not the flea medication you need to worry about, it's internal parasites that Ivermectin is used for. I would feel good about using Advantage for fleas and just don't worm with Ivermectin...

Yep, as Maggie said its Ivermectin that is really toxic to tort. Ivermectin is used for heartworm and other worming of Dogs.

Ivermectin is also used for external parasites as it makes the dog or cat taste bad and the fleas and ticks don't bite for long. :D

If its given orally to your dog, then it would be a concern, but flea those products you mention are topical.
