Just curious. Has anybody tried training their tortoise? Not sure what you would train them to do, but has anybody had success?

Other than to "follow the food goddess" I doubt you would be able to train them.

My old man Humphry use to know how to knock on the door to his patio when he wanted in/out...knocked with his gular....

all of my guys and gals lay down, stand up, wiggle their tail....just not when I want them to :p LOL

I did read and article about a CDT that was trained to step up on a ramp, that ramp was set up to open a gate, once open the tortoise could enter and eat and the gate would close once it sensed the motion back down the ramp....kinda fun :D

Yes it can be done. We train them everyday whether we intend to or not. If you ever hand feed them, you are training them to associate people with food in a positive way. That's the same way I train a puppy to come.

Besides associating me with food, I tap on my girls' shells 3 times before picking them up. They've learned what happens after I do that and seem alot more comfortable about being picked up.

My sister, Maggie, trained her large sulcata, Bob, to climb into a garden cart so she could take him around to the other side of the house. He used to live in a shed that was on one side of the house, while his outside yard was on the opposite side. So every morning, she would open his door, and tip the garden cart down. He'd climb into it and she'd wheel him around to his yard. In the evening, she'd put the cart in front of him and he'd climb into it for the trip back to the shed. She has since moved his shed to the other side, so the garden cart is no longer necessary...and he's too big for it anyway.

My tortoises come running when I ring their dinner ball...didn't take long for them to figure it out, either! :p

an old friend of mine who lived up in Desert Hills told me her Sulcata just appeared on her front step one day, when he knocked on her front door she opened it up and let him in. He stayed with them as one of their many pets, chickens, a pig, ostrichs. She offered him to me but he was much too huge for my yard.

It has been over 6 months since I use the cart with him. But now that we are considering a TFO get-together in the PNW I want to be able to move Bob and take him with us. So I got out that cart and he remembered it and climbed right in. He is seriously too big for it, but he still remembers it and I dumped him in the front yard and let him graze around a bit then tipped the cart down and he immediately got right into it again and off we went. I believe they can be trained with food to do a limited number of things, and they obviously remember them.
