I'm in the market for a UV monitor. I've heard that the solarmeter 6.5 is the best out there, but at £250 its way too expensive for my taste. Any suggestions for a cheaper alternative?
Also once I've got one, does anyone have an idea of what optimal UV levels are for a western Herman tort

Thanks guys

Josh's Frogs sells a SOLARMETER 6.5R
It's what I own, use and reccomend.
But it is $200 U.S.
Fact is, that's how much one costs.
The cheap ones you see on Ebay are not for the spectrum of light we are measuring for our pets.

The 6.5 is the only one that works for our purposes. The 6.5R is the exact same meter with a different sticker on it.

The UV level depends on how you are using it. I like a UVI reading of about 5-6, and only run that for about 3 hours mid day. If you are using it for lighting too and want to run it all day, I would set the height of the tube to give a reading of 2-4, and be sure there are lots of shady places to hide.
