I have a 10 month old Hermanns tortoise and need to know the best time frame and strength of UV he needs.
I have a Arcadia 12% HO strip light housed in a repti zoo ballast, currently on for about 10 hours a day at 3-4 uv.
To try to make my light last longer, is it better to run for only 3-4 hours a day at 6-7 uv? Will that hurt his eyes being that close? Are there any benefits running higher uv at a shorter time?

The UV light should be hung at height recommended on the packaging. It does only need to run 4 hours a day.

In FL it is warm and sunny enough all year to just put the baby in a safe enclosure outside for and hour or two a few times per week. You don't need indoor UV at all.

If you want it, it doesn't hurt anything, but 2-4 hours at a UVI of 3-4 is plenty of UV to get the job done.

I'm glad you responded..after lurking the threads for months, you are definitely someone I've tried to follow advise wise.
I am building him an outdoor garden where he can spend his days (bring in at night) but until I had that built, i wanted to know what the requirements were for indoor housing. Thank you so much!
