I went to a clients house for work today. They mentioned that they had a turtle. I asked if it was a tortoise. They were saying that they only grow to there enclosure size (actually got angry and yelled it). :). Anyway they showed him to me and the pyramiding was at least 1.5" tall. It was so sad but I couldn't say anything. I am there to help the client not the tortoise. :-(

Anyway, it is just bothering me. Wish we could fix people... Haha

I totally understand...I do a lot of rescues and its so hard to deal with owners that think they know everything but really don't. Maybe you could mention this forum with the approach they could connect with other owners....just a thought.

It is a tough situation. I've had many similar experiences where I can't really say much because they are clients. Once I build those relationships though then the more you can say and slowly educate. It sure can be frustrating though!

When I'm talking to someone I don't know about turtles/ tortoises and it isn't appropriate to critique their care right then and there (like how you were servicing a client) I bring up TFO and invite them to check it out with enthusiasm. Tell them about this great online site where people share about what they know and they can see a million turtle pictures. (hearing about pictures seems to be an attention grabber) Then, they can visit the site and maybe learn a thing or two on their own. People are more receptive to information when they are either seeking it, or stumble across it on their own. Many people automatically jump into defensive mode when you tell them they are wrong in something and try to slap them with the correct information. Even when your intentions are good. Shoving information down someone's throat in any category has never proved successful.

Just my thoughts.

I like the idea of just mentioning the website in a happy excited way. I didn't think of that. Hopefully I will have another chance with these people to do that. Not sure if they are open to ANY change but def can't hurt.

Thanks for the ideas!
